Research Associate – Cell Culture & Lab Operations

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Research Associate to join our San Carlos team in a hybrid role that combines hands-on bench work with day-to-day management of the lab site. Roughly half the position is at the bench: PBMC isolation, cancer cell and circulating tumor cell (CTC) culture, patient-derived organoids (PDOs) culture, and cell/organoid characterization. The other half focuses on supporting laboratory operations: purchasing, inventory, specimen logistics, vendor and facility coordination, scheduling, and documentation. The work supports the company's research programs in 3D cell culture and translational model development. The ideal candidate works well in a small team, can own the operational side with limited supervision, and adapts as priorities shift.

Key Responsibilities

Research

  • Culture, expand, and characterize primary cells, spheroids, and PDOs on both 2D and 3D platforms

  • Isolate PBMCs from whole blood by density gradient centrifugation and related methods

  • Maintain kidney cell and renal organoid cultures for the company's autologous renal cell therapy program

  • Process and handle patient specimens, including intake, documentation, and chain of custody

  • Maintain aseptic technique across routine cell culture operations

  • Prepare samples for downstream analysis (e.g., immunostaining, flow cytometry, DNA and RNA extraction)

  • Perform viability assessment, brightfield and fluorescence imaging, and organoid characterization

  • Record experimental procedures and results in the electronic laboratory notebook (ELN)

  • Execute experiments to written protocols, draft and revise SOPs for the assays you run

Laboratory Operations and Administration

  • Own purchasing end to end: obtain quotes, place orders, track and reconcile shipments

  • Maintain reagent, consumable, and cell inventories, and keep freezer and cold-storage records current

  • Prepare reagents, media, and buffers, and maintain the associated lot and expiration records

  • Arrange incoming and outgoing shipments of biological specimens

  • Maintain laboratory safety and compliance records (e.g., chemical inventory, biosafety documentation)

  • Contribute flexibly to other research and operational tasks as priorities shift in a startup setting

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Immunology, or a related life-science field

  • 1–3 years of hands-on mammalian cell culture experience

  • Demonstrated experience with sterile technique and routine culture maintenance

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation and record-keeping

  • Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively as part of a small team in a fast-paced environment

  • Willingness to take on administrative and operational responsibilities alongside bench work

  • Availability for recurring video meetings with the Taiwan team outside standard Pacific hours, typically in the evening (Mandarin is not required)

  • Comfortable handling human blood and clinical specimens under standard biosafety practice

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Hands-on experience handling and processing human blood samples (PBMC isolation, plasma collection, etc.)

  • Experience with primary cell culture, cancer cell culture, or CTC culture

  • Experience with kidney cell culture, renal progenitor cells, or kidney organoids

  • Experience with 3D cell culture systems (e.g., spheroid, organoid, scaffold-free, and hydrogel-based platforms)

  • Familiarity with ELN systems and lab inventory management

  • Experience with immunostaining, flow cytometry sample preparation, DNA and RNA extraction, RT-PCR

  • Experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189, or equivalent) with demonstrated attention to quality, documentation, and data integrity

  • Experience supporting clinical, translational, or diagnostic laboratory operations in a regulated setting

  • Experience with laboratory purchasing, inventory systems, or lab management responsibilities

  • Prior experience in a startup or fast-paced biotech environment
